The Chambers Thesaurus, 4th
The Chambers Thesaurus, 4th (2012) 今天入手。

http://imgur.com/ToZK0cL
感謝您的連結,我也有 The Synonym Finder 這本書。 關於 Chambers,後來,我有仔細查閱過,這本工具書裡含有不可容忍的錯誤,在 Collins A-Z Thesaurus 或 Penguin Thesaurus 都發現 soaring 與 towering 確實是分開的。我原先以為是類似 freezing cold, scorching hot 的用法,因為仔細查閱網路,towering steep 確實有人「連著一起」使用,例如:The castle ruin of Altenahr is situated on a towering steep rock high above the little town... 不過,有許多相關的網頁內容看似文法不通的人寫的。而 soaring lofty 也是同樣的狀況,例如:It also means soaring, lofty and having extensions that go upward as in a building ============ Dear Chambers customer service, I bought your hardcover The Chambers Thesaurus, 4th (ISBN: 978-0550102485) at the end of October and I've found some unbearable errors in your typesetting. Some of the commas in many entries that separate synonyms or alternative words listed after the headword are totally missing. This can especially be found in commas after the words ending with the letter 'g' or suffix '-ing'. Please look up the following entries. ■ mountainous (in page 658) CRAGGY, rocky, hilly, high, highland, upland, alpine, soaring lofty, towering steep Commas should have been added to the space between 'soaring' and 'lofty', 'towering' and 'steep'. Now they are all missing! The same misprint can also be found in ■ mouth (n.) (in page 659) sense 3.) BOASTING, bragging blustering babble, empty/idle talk ■ overpowering (adj.) (in page 711) overwhelming powerful, strong forceful, ..., suffocating stifling unbearable, nauseating sickening ■ offensive (adj.) (in page 694) sense 1.) DISAGREEABLE, ... displeasing disgusting odious, ... revolting repellent, sickening nauseating nasty, ... sense 2.) INSOLENT, ... rude, insulting affronting upsetting hurtful, wounding annoying exasperating impolite, ... ■ officious (adj.) (in page 695) obtrusive, domineering dictatorial, intrusive, interfering prying meddlesome, meddling inquisitive, ... I've searched the whole thesaurus and come across too many commas off like the above-mentioned misprints. It is truly an unacceptable blunder when the entries of a thesaurus contain phrases such as PUT ON THE MARKET (entry: offer <sense 4>, in page 694), SPHERE OF INFLUENCE (entry: orbit <sense 2>, in page 702), and TAKEN UP, WRAPPED UP, DEEP IN THOUGHT (entry: preoccupied <sense 1>, in page 774). This is the first time I've chosen Chambers as one of my thesaurus library collections, and I feel very disappointed at the typesetting of this edition. I wish Chambers would rectify these serious typos for future editions.
舟動兄您好; 當我看到soaring lofty, towering steep時,記憶中沒有這種用法。於是上google搜尋是有人用,原本以為是否是"疊詞",但沒有把握所以不便隨意po上來。在The Synonym Finder中 high-reaching, heaven-kissing, cloud-capped, cloud-touching在閱讀中倒是蠻常見。舟動兄追根究底的嚴謹態度值得我學習。
