A Profound Quote from Patrick J. O'Rourke

今天的網路報導指出，台灣當前吸毒的年齡層不斷往下降，警方甚至懷疑幫派滲入校園賣K它命（ketamine），其實這並非一天兩天的事了。很多年輕人沒有想過拉K會導致泌尿系統（urinary system）出問題，很可能將來膀胱（bladder）失去控制而從此尿失禁（incontinence of urine），他們還是繼續吸毒（take drugs）。據說有人才第一次拉K就漏尿。現今，各中級學校更加頻繁給學生驗毒，結果卻簡直防不勝防。這不禁讓人想到美國記者 Patrick J. O'Rourke 說過的一段話，作者以 drug/alcohol testing 暗喻人性中的四種惡念，實在相當幽默。

No drug, not even alcohol, causes the fundamental ills of society. If we are looking for the source of our troubles, we shouldn't test people for drugs. We should test them for stupidity, ignorance, greed, and love of power.

並非毒品——甚至也提不上是酒精——導致社會根本的問題。如果我們尋求問題的來源，我們不應該給人驗（檢測）毒（毒品），我們應該檢測他們是不是白痴、無知、貪婪、或是貪權。

drug 基本上是可數名詞，但按照語用上來說，no 之後的可數名詞採用單數是比較正式的說法，因此首句一開頭用單數 No drug；換另一角度來看，drug 在文中的概念表達同等於 alcohol，以抽象概念表達「毒品」與「酒精」兩種有害之物，亦可當做不可數名詞來理解。相對於第一句話的 drug，第二句的 test people for drugs，這裡的 drugs 意指「各種毒品」，則可與後文的種種「病症」（stupidity, ignorance, greed, and love of power）對照。
